Paul in Macedonia and Greece
NOW after the uproar ceased: Paul called to himself the disciples, and farewelling them, departed to go into Macedonia.
2 And when he had journeyed all through those parts, and had given them much encouragement: he came into Greece,
3 And made up his mind to labour there three months. And when the Jews plotted against him, as he was about to set sail to Syria: he decided to return back through Macedonia.
4 And there accompanied him to the province of Asia: Sopater of Berea; Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians; Gaius of Derbe; and Timothy; and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia.
5 These going beforehand, waited for us at Troas.
6 And we sailed out from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread; and came to those in Troas after five days, where we remained seven days.
Ministering in Troas
7 ¶ And on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread: Paul preached to them, being ready to depart the next day; and continued his speaking until midnight.
8 Now there were many lights in the upper room, where they were gathered together.
9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus; having fallen into a deep sleep, as Paul was a long time speaking, he sunk down with sleep: and fell down from the third story, and was taken up dead.
10 And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said: “Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him.”
11 And when he had came up again, and had broken bread, and eaten; and talked a long while, even till the break of day: so he departed.
12 And they brought the young man alive: and were not little comforted.
Troas to Miletus
13 ¶ Now before this we went to the ship, and sailed to Assos, there intending to take in Paul: for he had so instructed, being about to go by foot himself.
14 And when he met with us at Assos, we took him in, and came to Mitylene.
15 And we sailed from there, and came the next day offshore from Chios; and the next day we arrived at Samos, and stayed at Trogyllium; and the next day we came to Miletus.
16 For Paul had determined to sail past Ephesus, because he wanted not to spend time in the province of Asia: for he hasted (if it were possible for him) to be in Jerusalem for the day of Pentecost.
The Ephesian Elders Exhorted
17 ¶ Now from Miletus he sent a message to Ephesus, and summoned the elders of the congregation.
18 And when they had come to him, he said to them: “You know, from the first day that I came into the province of Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all times;
19 Serving the Lord with all humility, and with many tears, and trails: which befell me by the plotting of the Jews.
20 And how I kept back nothing that was advantageous to you: but have showed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to house;
21 Bearing witness both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks: of repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.”
22 ¶ “And now, behold: compelled by the spirit I go into Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there;
23 Except that the Holy Spirit witnesses in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me.
24 But none of these things move me, nor do I count my life precious to myself: so that I might finish my course with joy; and the ministry, which I have received from the Lord Jesus: to bear witness to the gospel of the grace of God.
25 And now, behold: I know that you all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God: shall see my face no more.
26 Therefore you bear witness this day: that I am clean from the blood of all men.
27 For I have not drawn back from declaring to you: the whole counsel of God.”
28 ¶ “Therefore, keep up your guard for yourselves, and all the flock: over which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to feed the congregation of God: which He has purchased with His own blood.
29 For I know this: that after my departing, shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
30 Also of your ownselves shall men arise: speaking misleading things, to draw away disciples after themselves.
31 Therefore keep watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn everyone night and day with tears.”
32 ¶ “And now, brothers: I entrust you to God, and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all those which are made holy.
33 I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or clothing.
34 And, you yourselves know, that these hands have provided for my own necessities, and to those that were with me.
35 I have demonstrated to you all things: so that in your labour, you ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He said: ‘It is more blessed to give, than to receive.’“
36 ¶ And when he had spoken this: he knelt down, and prayed together with them all.
37 And all with considerable weeping, fell on Paul’s neck, and kissed him;
38 Very much distressed by the words which he spoke: that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him to the ship.
