Blood of Bulls and Goats Cannot Take Away Sins
BECAUSE the law, having a shadow of the good things about to come, and not the image itself of the actual things; can never, with those sacrifices which are offered continually throughout the year, make the comers perfect.
2 For would they not then, ceased to be offered? Inasmuch as, the worshippers once purified, should have had no more conscience of sins.
3 Rather with those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins throughout the year.
4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and of goats to take away sins.
Jesus’s Sacrifice Fulfils God’s Will
5 ¶ Therefore when he came into the world, he said: “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you have prepared for me:
6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin you have had no pleasure.
7 Then said I: Behold, I have come (in the volume of the book it is written of me), to do your will, O God.”
8 ¶ Above when he said: “Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin you did not desire, neither had pleasure therein”; which are offered in accordance to the law;
9 Then he said, “Behold, I come to do your will, O God”. He abolishes the first, so that he may establish the second.
10 Whom, through his will we are made holy through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all time.
11 ¶ And on the one hand; every priest, stands serving throughout the day and offering the same sacrifices many times, which can never take away sins:
12 But on the other hand; he, offered one sacrifice for sins, for all time, and sat down at the right hand of God;
13 And from henceforth, waiting for his enemies to be made a footstool for his feet.
14 For by one offering, he has made perfect, for all time, those that are being made holy.
15 ¶ And the Holy Spirit is also our witness: for he, after having said:
16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws upon their hearts, and on their minds will I write them”;
17 And then, “their sins and lawlessness will I remember no more”.
18 And now, since there is forgiveness, there is no longer offering for sin.
A New and Living Way to God
19 ¶ Possessing therefore brothers, confidence and courage for the purpose of entering into the holy places through the blood of Jesus,
20 A new and living way, which he has established for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
21 And having a high priest over the house of God;
22 Let us approach with a sincere heart in complete certainty of faith, having our hearts made pure (sprinkled) from a guilty conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
23 Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
24 And consider one another, with respect to provoking love and good works:
25 Not forsaking the assembling together of ourselves, as is the custom of some; rather, urging and encouraging one another: and so much more so, as you see the day approaching.
Punishment for Those Who Continue in Sin
26 ¶ For if we sin wilfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer exists any sacrifice for sins,
27 But a terrifying expectation of judgment and fiery jealousy, which will devour the adversaries.
28 Anyone that rejected Moses’ law died without compassion under two or three witnesses:
29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy, who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded the blood of the covenant, by which he was made holy, a common thing, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?
30 For we know him that has said: “Vengeance is mine, I will repay”, saith the Lord. And again: “The Lord will judge his people”.
31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God!
32 ¶ But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after you were enlightened, you endured a great struggle of sufferings;
33 Partly, while you were put to shame publicly both by insults and afflictions; and partly, while you became companions of those so treated
34 (and also for having compassion of me in my bonds); and accepted with joy the seizure of your property, knowing within yourselves that you have in heaven a better and enduring possession.
The Righteousness Through Faith Shall Live
35 ¶ Therefore, do not throw away your courage and confidence, which has a great reward.
36 For you have need of endurance, so that, after having done the will of God, you might receive the promise.
37 “For yet a little while, and he that is coming, will come and will not delay.
38 Now the righteous through faith shall live: but if any draw back, my soul will have no pleasure in him.”
39 But we are not of those who draw back into destruction; rather of faith for the saving of the soul.
