Mary Anoints Jesus
THEN Jesus, six days before the passover came into Bethany, where Lazarus was, who had been dead: whom He raised from the dead.
2 There they made Him a supper; and Martha served: and Lazarus was one of those that sat at the table with Him.
3 Then Mary took a pound of ointment of very costly pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the scent of the ointment.
4 Then one of His disciples, Judah Iscariot (Simon’s son, which was about to betray Him), said:
5 “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii, and given to the poor?”
6 Now this he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the money bag, and carried what was deposited therein.
7 Then Jesus said: “Leave her alone: for the day of my burial, she has observed this.
8 For the poor you always have with you; but me you do not always have.”
9 ¶ A great crowd of the Jews therefore, knew that He was there: and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom He had raised from the dead.
10 But the chief priests consulted, that they might put Lazarus to death also;
11 Because by reason of him, many of the Jews went away, and believed in Jesus.
Triumphal Entry
12 ¶ The next day a great crowd that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming into Jerusalem:
13 Took branches of palm trees, and went out to meet Him, and cried: “Hosanna; Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord: The King of Israel!”
14 And Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat thereon; as it is written:
15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion: behold, your King comes, sitting on a donkey’s colt.”
16 (These things, His disciples understood not at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things to Him.)
17 Then, the people that were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bore witness.
18 Through this also, the crowd met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign.
19 Therefore, the Pharisees said among themselves: “Observe how you accomplish nothing! Behold, the world has gone away to follow Him!”
20 ¶ And there were certain Greeks among those that came up to worship at the feast;
21 Then, they came to Philip, which was of Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying: “lord, we want to see Jesus.”
22 Philip came and told Andrew; and again, Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
Jesus Prays
23 ¶ Now Jesus answered them, saying: “The hour has come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
24 In Truth, I say to you: Except a grain of wheat fall into the ground and die, it remains alone: but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit.
25 He that loves his life, shall lose it; and he that hates his life in this world, shall keep it into eternal life.
26 If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there also shall my servant be; and if anyone serves me: him will my Father honour.
27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause, I came to this hour.
28 Father, glorify your name.” Then there came a voice from heaven, saying: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
29 Therefore the crowd, that stood by, and heard it, said: “it was thunder”; others said: “an angel spoke to Him.”
30 Jesus answered and said: “This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes.
31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the ruler of this world be cast out.
32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.”
33 This He said, signifying what kind of death He was about to die.
34 The crowd answered Him: “We have heard from the law, that: ‘the Christ abides forever’; and how do you say: ‘The Son of man must be lifted up?’ who is this Son of man?”
35 Then Jesus said to them: “Yet a little while, is the light with you: walk while you have the light, lest darkness overcome you: for he that walks in darkness, knows not where he is going.
36 While you have the light, believe in the light: that you may become children of light.” These things spoke Jesus, and departed, and did conceal Himself from them.
The Peoples Unbelief
37 ¶ And though He had wrought so many signs before them, yet they believed not in Him:
38 That the saying of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: “Lord, who has believed our report? and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
39 Through this, they were not able to believe, because that Isaiah said again:
40 “He has blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and turn back, and I should heal them.”
41 These things said Isaiah, when he saw His glory, and spoke of Him.
42 And yet among the chief rulers also, many believed in Him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be expelled from the synagogue:
43 For they loved the glory of men, more than the glory of God.
44 ¶ Now Jesus cried out and said: “He that believes in me, believes not in me, but in Him that sent me.
45 And he that sees me, sees Him that sent me.
46 I come as a light into the world, that whosoever believes in me, should not remain in darkness.
47 And if anyone hears my words, and believes not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 He that rejects me, and receives not my words, has one that judges him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
49 For I have not spoken of myself: but the Father which sent me, He gave me commandment of what I should say and what I should speak.
50 And I know that His commandment is eternal life; whatsoever I speak therefore: just as the Father said to me, thus I speak.
