Jesus Sends Out the Twelve
THEN He called His twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.
2 And He sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
3 And He said to them: “Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor bag, nor bread, nor silver coins; neither have two coats apiece.
4 And whatsoever house you enter into, there abide, and from there depart.
5 And whosoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet, for a witness against them.”
6 And they departed, and went through the towns, proclaiming the gospel, and healing everywhere.
Herod Perplexed by Jesus
7 ¶ Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by Him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that: John had risen from the dead;
8 And of some, that: Elijah had appeared; and of others, that: one of the prophets of old had risen again.
9 And Herod said: “John I have beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things?” And he sort to see Him.
Five Thousand Fed
10 ¶ And the apostles, when they had returned, told Him all that they had done. And He took them, and went aside privately into a desolate place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.
11 And the people, when they knew it, followed Him: and He received them, and spoke to them of the kingdom of God, and healed those that had need of healing.
12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said to Him: “Send the crowd away, that they may go into the surrounding towns and countryside, and lodge, and get provisions: for we are here in a desolate place.”
13 But He said to them: “You give them to eat.” And they said: “We have no more, but five loaves and two fish; except we should go and buy meal for all these people:”
14 For they were about five thousand men. And He said to His disciples: “Make them sit down in companies of fifty apiece.”
15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.
16 Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven: He blessed them, and broke, and gave to the disciples to set before the crowd.
17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them, twelve baskets.
Peter Confesses Jesus as Christ
18 ¶ And it came to pass, as He was alone praying, His disciples came together to Him: and He asked them, saying: “Whom do the crowd say that I am?”
19 They answering said: “John the Baptist; but some say: Elijah; and others say: that one of the prophets of old is risen again.”
20 He said to them: “But whom say you, that I am?” Peter answering said: “The Christ of God.”
21 And He straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man this thing;
22 Saying: “The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.”
The Cost of Following Jesus
23 ¶ And He said to them all: “If any man wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
24 For whosoever wishes to save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
25 For what does it benefit a man, if he gains the whole world, and himself is destroyed, or lost.
26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when He shall come in His and the Father’s glory, and of the holy angels.
27 But I tell you of a truth: there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.”
The Transfiguration
28 ¶ And it came to pass about eight days after these words: He took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
29 And as He prayed, the appearance of His countenance became altered, and His raiment was white and gleamed like lightning.
30 And, behold, there talked with Him two men, which were Moses and Elijah:
31 Who appeared in glory, and spoke of His exodus, which He was about to fulfil in Jerusalem.
32 But Peter and those that were with Him, were heavy with sleep: and when they were fully awake, they saw His glory, and the two men that stood with Him.
33 And it came to pass, as they departed from Him, Peter said to Jesus: “Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tabernacles: one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah”: not knowing what he said.
34 While he thus spoke, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying: “This is my beloved Son: listen to Him.”
36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days, any of those things which they had seen.
Boy with an Unclean Spirit Healed
37 ¶ And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met Him.
38 And, behold, a man from the crowd cried out, saying: “Teacher, I beg you, look upon my son: for he is my only child.
39 And, lo, a spirit takes him, and he suddenly cries out; and it convulses him, that he foams at the mouth, and bruising him hardly departs from him.
40 And I begged your disciples to cast him out; and they could not.”
41 And Jesus answering said: “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and tolerate you? Bring your son here.”
42 And as he was still coming, the demon threw him down, and convulsed him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
Jesus Foretells His Death
43 ¶ And they were all amazed at the majesty of God. But while they wondered every one, at all things which Jesus did, He said to His disciples:
44 “Let these words sink into your ears: for the Son of man is about to be handed over into the hands of men.”
45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hidden from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask Him of that saying.
Who is the Greatest
46 ¶ Then there arose a reasoning among them: which of them should be greatest.
47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart: took a child, and set him by Him,
48 And said to them: “Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receives me: and whosoever shall receive me receives Him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.”
Anyone Not Against Us, Is For Us
49 ¶ And John answered and said: “Master, we saw one casting out demons in your name; and we forbad him, because he followed not with us.”
50 And Jesus said to him: “Forbid him not: for he that is not against us, is for us.”
A Samaritan Village Rejects Jesus
51 ¶ And it came to pass, when the time had come that He should be received up: He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem;
52 And sent messengers before His presence: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for Him.
53 And they did not receive Him, because His face was as though He would go into Jerusalem.
54 And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said: “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elijah did?”
55 But He turned, and rebuked them, and said: “You know not what manner of spirit, you are of.
56 For the Son of man has not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” And they went to another village.
The Cost of Following Jesus
57 ¶ And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said to Him: “Lord, I will follow you wheresoever you go.”
58 And Jesus said to him: “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has no where to lay His head.”
59 And He said to another: “Follow me.” But he said: “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.”
60 Jesus said to him: “Leave the dead to bury their dead: but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”
61 And another also said: “Lord, I will follow you; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home in my house.”
62 And Jesus said to him: “No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”
