Traditions and Commandments
THEN came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying:
2 “Why do your disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.”
3 But He answered and said to them: “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God through your tradition?
4 For God commanded, saying: ‘Honour your father and mother;’ and: ‘He that curses father or mother, let him die the death.’
5 But you say: ‘Whosoever shall say to his father or mother: “Whatsoever you might have been helped by me, is gifted to God.”
6 And honours not his father or his mother: he shall be free.’ Thus you have invalidated the authority of the commandment of God through your tradition.
7 You hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying:
8 ‘This people draw near to me with their mouth, and honour me with their lips: but their heart is far from me.
9 And in vain they do worship me, teaching as doctrines, the commandments of men.'”
True Defilement
10 ¶ And He called the crowd, and said to them: “Hear, and understand:
11 Not that which goes into the mouth, defiles a man: but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man!”
12 Then came His disciples, and said to Him: “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?”
13 But He answered and said: “Every plant, which my heavenly Father has not planted, shall be uprooted.
14 Leave them alone: they are blind guides of the blind. And if the blind, guide the blind: both shall fall into a ditch.”
15 Then answered Peter and said to Him: “Declare to us this parable.”
16 And Jesus said: “Are you also still without understanding?
17 Do you not still understand, that whatsoever enters in at the mouth goes into the belly, and is cast out into the latrine?
18 But those things which proceed out of the mouth, come forth from the heart: and they defile the man.
19 For out of the heart proceeds: evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
20 These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashed hands, defiles not a man.”
A Gentiles Daughter is Healed
21 ¶ Then Jesus went from there, and departed into the borders of Tyre and Sidon.
22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same borders, and cried to Him, saying: “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David: my daughter is grievously vexed with a demon.”
23 But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and besought Him, saying: Send her away; for she cries out after us.”
24 But He answered and said: “I am not sent, except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
25 Then she came and bowed down to Him, saying: “Lord, help me!”
26 But He answered and said: “It is not fitting to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.”
27 And she said: “Indeed Lord: but yet the dogs eat of the scraps which fall from their lords’ table.”
28 Then Jesus answered and said to her: “O woman, great is your faith: be it to you as you will.” And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
Jesus Heals Many
29 ¶ And Jesus departed from there, and came near to the sea of Galilee; and went up into a mountain, and sat down there.
30 And great crowds came to him, having with them, those that were lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others: and put them down at Jesus’ feet; and He healed them:
31 Insomuch that the crowds wondered, when they saw the mute speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they gave honour to the God of Israel.
Jesus Feeds Four Thousand
32 ¶ Then Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said: “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have continued with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.”
33 And His disciples said to Him: “from where should we get so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a crowd?”
34 And Jesus said to them: “How many loaves do you have?” And they said: “Seven, and a few little fish.”
35 And He commanded the crowds to sit down on the ground.
36 And He took the seven loaves and the fish, and gave thanks, and broke: and gave to His disciples, and the disciples to the crowd.
37 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken fragments that were left: seven baskets full.
38 And those that ate were four thousand men, beside women and children.
39 And He sent away the crowds, and embarked into the boat, and came into the borders of Magdala.
