Dead to the Law in Christ
OR do you not know, brothers, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives?
2 For the woman which has a husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he lives; but if the husband dies, she is released from the marriage law of her husband.
3 So then if, while her husband lives, she is married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband is dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.
Bring Forth Fruit to God
4 ¶ Therefore, my brothers, you are also put to death to the law by the body of Christ; that you should be married to another, him who is raised from the dead, for the purpose of bring forth fruit to God.
5 For when we were in the flesh the lusts of sins (which through the law) worked in our body parts to bring death.
6 But now we are delivered from the law (being dead to that which controlled us) that we should serve in newness of the spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
Sin by The Holy Law
7 ¶ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Not so! On the contrary I had not come to understand sin, but by the law: for I knew not covetousness, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
8 But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, accomplished in me all manner of covetousness. For without the law sin was dead.
9 For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin became active, and I began to die.
10 And the commandment, which was for the purpose of life, I found to be death.
11 For sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me.
12 Therefore then, the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
Is the Law Sin?
13 ¶ Was then that which is good, made death unto me? Not so! On the contrary, sin that it might be shown as sin, worked death in me through that which is good; that sin might become exceeding sinful through the commandment.
14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under the control of sin.
15 For that which I do, I do not understand: for that which I want to do, that I don’t do; but that which I hate, that do I.
16 If then, I do that which I do not want to do, I agree that the law is advantageous.
17 Accordingly, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that lives in me.
18 ¶ For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) lives no good thing: for purpose to do good is present with me; but how to accomplish that which is good I do not find.
19 For the good that I purpose, I do not: but the evil which I do not purpose, that I do.
20 Now if I do that I purpose not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that lives in me.
21 As a result of the law I have discovered, when I purpose to do good, evil is present with me.
22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
23 But I perceive another law in my members, actively opposing the law of my mind, and making me captive to the law of sin which is within my members.
24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of death?
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So accordingly, with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
