While translating Ephesians 2:1 I did a word study on παράπτωμα and ἁμαρτία.
ἁμαρτία is used consistently in the New Testament for the word ‘sin’ in all but one place where I have changed it for consistencies sake.
παράπτωμα however, was used for ‘offences’, ‘fall’, trespasses’, ‘sins’, ‘faults’. I have a problem with all these usage, mainly because the inconsistent use of the Greek word in English gives the reader no opportunity to come to an understanding of how this Greek word is used in the Bible.
I think ‘trespasses’ is also a dated word, which people today would more associate with coming onto someone’s private property with out permission.
The best fit for the word παράπτωμα in my opinion is the English word ‘transgressions’ which I have changed my translation to include. Also by using ‘transgressions’ consistently the reader will have the opportunity to study the usage of this word throughout the New Testament.
